The town of Aurora in the greater Toronto area is about 50 km or 40 minute drive along Highway 404. A lot of folks that live in Aurora actually make the commute to Toronto every day as there are more employment opportunities in Toronto than Aurora even though Aurora is a vibrant and bustling town all of its own. It originated in 1793 when Canada's Lieut. Gov. John Graves Simcoe extended Yonge Street all the way to Holland Landing, a small community near Aurora beginning a residential development throughout the area.
In 1801, 14 homes had sprung up in Aurora but it wasn't until 1863 that Aurora was officially incorporated as a village and became a town in 1888 continuing to be a part of the greater Toronto area.
Folks love living in Aurora because it's close to Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe just to the north. Lake Simcoe, while not formally one of the Great Lakes, it provides multiple recreational activities and a beautiful landscape. You'll find trails and picnic areas, conservation and preserve areas all around the lake.
Aurora is also known for its fantastic shopping and dining. With unique cheese shops, coffee shops, and a great collection of boutique stores along Main Street, shopping and dining is alive and well in Aurora.
