Rebels led a series of meetings sparking a rebellion from the citizens to take over the capital. A number of leaders from the area were attained for high treason, convicted, and hanged. But, that was nearly 200 years ago and by the 1950s, Newmarket was experiencing a suburban boom due to its close proximity to Toronto and had a rapid population increase up until about 1970.
