Relocating to Newmarket Ontario
Newmarket is about 45 minutes south of downtown Toronto and is known for its central role in the Rebellions of 1837 to 1838. The small town was a focal point of disconnect against the manipulations of the governing Family Compact. Rebels led a series of meetings sparking a rebellion from the citizens to take over the capital. A number of leaders from the area were attained for high treason, convicted, and hanged. But, that was nearly 200 years ago and by the 1950s, Newmarket was experiencing a suburban boom due to its close proximity to Toronto and had a rapid population increase up until about 1970.
Several buildings in the Newmarket community have been designated as Heritage Sites. Each home has a dedicated plaque stating when it was constructed and the purpose of the building. Most of these are either on or close to Maine Street. In total, there are about 23 buildings designated as Heritage Sites along with the Newmarket Ghost Canal in Bayview Park. This is a 19th-century canal that was never exactly finished as construction stopped in 1911, but it still makes the list.
There are several trails, parks, and conservation areas around Newmarket including Fairy Lake, which boasts a large park in the middle of town and hosts several festivals, fairs, and the annual Shakespeare in the Park put on by the local theatre company. Newmarket also has plenty of trails and has a trail guide specifically designed for the trails of Newmarket.
