Oakville got his start back in 1793 but it wasn't until the 1860s and 1870s that the town eventually became industrialized with the opening of Cities Service Canada and Shell Canada Oil Refineries, both of which are now closed. But, all of this industrialization including the Ford Motor Companies Canadian headquarters, drew in a wealth of population and in 1962, the town of Oakville merged with its neighbouring villages of Brontë, Palermo Sheridan, and Trafalgar Township to become the new town of Oakville.
Oakville is divided into 13 distinct communities including Old Oakville, Kerr Village, Brontë, Eastlake, Clearview, College Park, Iroquois's Ridge North, Iroquois's Ridge South, Glen Abby, Palermo, River Oaks, Uptown Core, and West Oak Trails.
Oakville is known for its sports. It has several teams in soccer, lacrosse, hockey, skating, baseball, golf, and canoeing. There are several golf courses, canoeing clubs, skating and sports complexes, and sports fields all over Oakville.
Oakville is also known for its events and festivals including the Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival, the Waterfront Festival, For the Love of the Arts Festival, the Canadian Open and Kerrfest, an outdoor music festival that takes place in early September with free performances open to the public located at Westwood Park.

The Helton District School Board and the Helton Catholic District school Board cover the majority of Oakville for both public and private schools. It is one of the highest ratios of private schools to student population in the country. The Conseil scolaire Viamonde, and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School (Oakville) and White Oaks Secondary School both offer the International Baccalaureate Program. Oakville is also home to Appleby College, a private school for grades 7 to 12 established in 1911.
