Relocating to Pickering Ontario
Even though Pickering got its start a few centuries ago, Pickering really didn't pick up population until the 20th century. In 1813, Pickering had just 180 residents, 40 more the neighboring Scarborough. There was a large influx of Quaker immigrants in the United States around the 1810s and slowly grew over time. In 1941, the southeastern portion of the Township became the independent town of Ajax and when Ontario became Durham Region in 1974, some of the town lines were modified. Pickering Village was one of the population centres of the original Township and became a part of Ajax. Today, the city covers about 231 km². There are several villages and communities within Pickering including Cherrywood, Green River, and Whitevale.
Pickering is a beautiful community with parks, great schools, lush forests, and a great waterfront trail. Pickering is also home to the Pickering Food Truck Festival, a three-day foodie extravaganza featuring over 40 food trucks taking over Esplanade Park. Pickering Town Centre is a great shopping mall complete with over 200 stores and is one of the busiest malls in the area.
Check out Petticoat Creek Conservation Area with over 69 different types of trees and wildlife. The waterfront trail runs through this area offering beautiful views of Lake Ontario. It's a great spot to hike, jog, or go mountain biking. It also boasts a 1600 m² pool, a 1000 m² splash pad, and beach.
Pickering Ontario Schools
Pickering is served by the Durham District School Board, the Durham Catholic District School Board, the Conseil scolaire Viamonde and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud. The public board operates 17 elementary schools and to secondary schools. Pickering is also home to Blaisdale Montessori School, a private school chain with several locations throughout the city.
