Richmond Hill is home to the David Dunlap Observatory, an astronomical observatory. Formerly owned and operated by the University of Toronto, it was designed and built in 1935 and is now owned by the city of Richmond Hill providing heritage preservation and unique recreational opportunities. The unique observatory features a 74-inch reflector telescope, the largest in Canada.
Richmond Hill has a motto: En la rose, je fleuris, which is French for Like the rose, I flourish. This reflects either the motto of the Duke of Richmond or the fact that the city was a rose-growing city in the early 20th century. It was also known as the Rose Capital of Canada but a more recent motto is A little north, a little nicer. It is the only municipal Canadian government to have light pollution laws in place due to the presence of the David Dunlap Observatory. As recent as 2013, the city's council passed a bylaw to ban the number 4 from new street numbers because is considered to be bad luck by some Asian cultures.
Richmond Hill has a variety of activities, events, and facilities for residents to enjoy. It provides several sports fields, splash pads, swimming and skating opportunities, summer camps, tennis courts, and a wealth of parks, trails, and outdoor facilities and programs. The York Region District School Board serves Richmond Hill and operates 27 public elementary schools within the city limits and five secondary schools. Most of the students in the Your Region District School Board have scored above the provincial average on the assessment of reading, writing, and mathematics. The York Catholic District School Board operates 13 Catholic elementary schools in Richmond Hill. It also operates two Catholic secondary schools. There are also up for private primary schools in Richmond Hill and five private secondary schools.
