Whitby is located in southern Ontario east of Ajax on the north side of Lake Ontario. It's home to about 130,000 residents and is known as a commuter suburb in the greater Toronto area. Most of Whitby is urban with an economic hub in the northern part is more rural containing the communities of Ashburn, Brooklin, Myrtle, and Myrtle station.
Like many of the other towns in the greater Toronto area, Whitby was named after the European town of Whitby York Shire. Settlements date back to the early 1800s but it wasn't until 1968 that the town of Whitby and Township of Whitney efficiently combined to form the Whitby border it is today.

Whitby is also home to Canada's largest municipality-owned and operated Recreation Centre called the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, a 250,000 square-foot recreational facility with six arenas, two swimming pools, a restaurant, food court, athletic training facility and meeting rooms. And that's just inside… Inside is six tennis courts, three baseball diamonds, two unlit baseball diamonds in a fully lit tournament-quality soccer pitch. Whitby is served by the Durham District School Board where its headquarters lies. There are 24 elementary schools and five secondary schools. The Catholic school board oversees all the Catholic education throughout the region and full French language education is provided by the Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. Whitby is also home to Trafalgar Castle School, an independent school for women for grades sister 12 in a university preparatory program. There are several Montessori schools and a Skills Training Centre of Durham College.
